Chapter 2

“Cannibalism between wolves is common; if they’re hungry enough they have no problem devouring their own kind.”

“And once you connect to your spirit animal, you can turn to them to help give you courage or strength to get through difficult situations, there are even reports of people who have connected so strongly to their spiritual animal that they develop traits of that animal and after brain scans, there has been proof of brain activity and indeed traits of their spirit animal.”

We were in religious education, yeah, learning about spiritual animals in RE. We were doing about after life and death and spirits and stuff like that. Our teacher was going on again as usual, we stopped doing real work ages ago, now it was just listening to the teach rant on about things, it was a lecture lesson really. If you knew what she was talking about you were lucky, if you didn’t, then you had to just hope you could guess the GCSE answers.

“What about you Jake?”
“What?”
“I asked what about you?”
“What about me?”
“The question I just asked you?”
“Sorry Miss I wasn’t listening”
“Stay five minutes after class then, and we’re going through everyone and what they think their spirit animal is.”
“Oh, I don’t know then”
“That’s because you weren’t listening”

Yeah right, I’m sure listening to what she was talking about would somehow make me find my spirit animal.

“Okay then class, homework” Miss Sheppard said. There was an instinctive sense that we all weren’t going to do it.
“Write in your homework diaries to try and find out what your spirit animal is, how you can connect to it, and write down any effects it has. And as for you Mr Bosley, you have five minutes with me.”
“Yes Miss” I sighed, she knew I didn’t really care, she knew I would’ve walked out in an instant even with the threat of another detention, but I stayed, there was something about RE that I liked, something about your own opinion, either that or it was because with your own opinion, you can never get anything wrong, it’s your own opinion. But there was something about the spiritual animals that intrigued me, it was that people could be affected by their spiritual animal and develop traits. Knowing me I would end up having a rabbit or something as a spirit animal and end up hopping around school eat carrots. It still interested me about developing the traits, becoming more like an animal; we must’ve all had that thought to at some point. Most of it is wanting to be a bird or fly, even if you developed bird traits, I had a feeling that jumping off a building and flapping your arms thinking you’re a bird wouldn’t work out too well.

“Seeing as you weren’t listening though out most of the lesson, on top of the homework you already have, you need to research about how spiritual animals work to catch up on what you missed”
“Yes Miss”
“Go on then, get to your next lesson before you’re late”
“K”

I had a feeling my homework would be copied and pasted from some website I found off Google as usual. I rarely really did my homework, and when I did, I never put any effort into it. I knew I was starting my exams which would basically determine my future and whether I would make it in life or not. I knew even if I tried, I could never revise, I just couldn’t. If all else failed I could just join the army or something, I really didn’t care.
