Doctor Sleep

Doctor Sleep

A Poem by Simon Welsh
"

I spent my twenties getting over my teen years

"
I left my lost hours hanging from the coat hook
There's nothing left to salvage here
What became of my 'peace of mind''?
'Cause I spent my twenties getting over my teen years

Who are you?
At least, who have you become?
I see you in my mirror
but the reflection tells lies
I don't mind what I see
as long as I still have a grip on everything
in years to come

I won't sleep if I can't dream
Nothing else will keep me company in the early hours
My shadow seems to be stalling wherever I walk
Maybe it's yesterday slipping away from me

I spent my twenties getting over my teen years

wow. now ain't that the truth. Then we spend several more years discovering who we've become.
great write from you. enjoyed it.

On a side note, but kind of related to the poem, there's a song call Sleeping Sickness by Dallas Green. You might like it.

Dark and cold we may be, but this Is no winter now. The frozen misery..... I think I have spent years in a state of unhealthy sleep part work part personality part others when I read this I couldn't do anything else but smile. And the questions you asked oh them questions.....

Nicely put Elliot

Thankyou

I can relate to this, Elliott...there is a comfort in the slumber, (which is not always a great remedy for depression)...
We tend to sleep away our lives when we want to avoid the pain. Our bodies seem to shut down and release a certain chemical that enables us to escape to dreamland where it's safe.

You grab the very string of thought, and pull with your words....unraveling to the very end.

Nicely done!~xoxo~

I love the ideas in your poem...waking up to realize your so much older so much different than you remember. It is a scary thought, but sometimes in all the madness we loose our selves and that is what this poem feels like to me.

I won't sleep if I can't dream.
This is my favorite line in the poem, because it just says so much, and it is one of those perfect lines where you can hold it to its literal meaning and it makes sense or you can let your imagination run with it and it will still make sense in so many other ways.

Over all I think this is a great poem with a great message. :)
