City sidewalks.

City sidewalks.

A Poem by Sarah McKeever Hitt

Am I true

with my blinking eyes and my trembling hands?

is it real

the day with the star shaped clouds?

I had to look twice

I saw a tricky little girl

hanging around her flat tired bike

I could see in her eyes

her plotting and schemes

on days like this I hardly notice

but that girl might as well have been me.

This is summer in the city

says the red inked billboard behind me

The sign stole the city skyline

and my hands have yet to stop shaking.

What in God's word is this

the on again off again emotion

which turns from tears to laughs

as I tread the city sidewalks

This must be real

the air smells like fresh mowed grass

just the way I remembered it

when I used to walk with you.
