I would lie

I would lie

A Poem by Sarah McKeever Hitt

I would lie to myself forever
if this turned out to be fake.
If honesty would take you away from me
I would live the rest of my life in contempt.
I can not think of anything I want more
than to make this the one big thing I have done
that my mother would be proud of,
and that would be in bold print in my biography.
If this is just a hoax
than I will shield your eyes
so you never see me as anything other than in love with you.
If we aren't meant for one another
I would spend the rest of my life alone
because I can not think of anyone besides you when I go to sleep.
