What did I know?

What did I know?

A Poem by Sarah McKeever Hitt

What did I know?
I was living on borrowed time
And you had the prettiest watch I had ever seen.
Of course I felt it
That inevitable moment
Where you became permanent in my life
But did you?
Free from the bounds holding me back
I told you just what I wanted to have from you
Just like a prisoner
You turned it back to me as a punishment
But that didn’t phase me then
Be assured, it still doesn’t.
Lend me a moment
To tell you that my back is sore
From holding up this sign for you to ignore.
Your silence won’t alter me
Won’t knock me off course
When you are ready to find me
I may still be standing right where you left me
Out in the rain bare-shouldered waiting.
For you to ask me
“How was I supposed to know?”
Innocent enough are those who deny
The things that need their immediate attention
Guilty enough are those who don’t force the truth
But which one are you?
Judge, jury and warden await
This time it is I who tells you which seat to sit in
And I hope that the chair of the condemned is as comfortable
As the one you took as your own more than a lifetime ago.
