Drowning

Drowning

A Poem by Sarah McKeever Hitt

I am drowning.

Wading below the surface and trying to breathe

Growing accustomed to gasping

as you hold the air just out of my reach.

Just like you.

Knowing what would save my life

holding it dangling in at my fingertips

pulling back just when I stop reaching.

I'm sick of it.

Hanging my life on the line for this

washing away my better judgements of you

when you toss me a faulty lifeline.

It's killing me

to see you pretend not to acknowlege me

simply wiping your face of the water

splashed on you as I try to stay afloat.

Well done, well done!! Concise and with fine word selection and imagery. The emotion that comes through the words is as raw and as furious as if it had a life of its own. I look forward to reading your other works.
