This time

This time

A Poem by Sarah McKeever Hitt

I want you to pick me up early
To see if I am as prepared as I said I was
I want you to make small talk with me
to see if I am as nervous as you are
because I am.

I want you to show me around your city
to see if I am impressed by all the lights and speed
I want you to sneak a look at me
to see if I am really sitting here with you
because I am.

I want you to reach for me
to touch my leg to make sure that I am real
I want you to drive us to your house
to see if I am ready to practice what I preach
because I am,

I want you to stare me down
to see if I am willing to hold my own with you
I want you to kiss me
To see if I am brave enough to take this as far as I want
Because I am.

I want you to fall asleep next to me
to see if I am the girl that you hide in your dreams
I want you to set the alarm
to see if I am there in the middle of the night
because I am.

I want you to find me again
To see that I am still willing to share this with you
I want you to search within your heart
to see if you are willing to make all of this reality
because I am, this time.

i really liked this poem. it shows both the tentative feelings and the certainty in new relationships. tentative more at the other person's feelings than your own. very nicely written.
