Pretend

Pretend

A Poem by Sarah McKeever Hitt
"

so far from me...so close to perfect...so far from real

"
I pretend not to notice
when you close your eyes and make believe that I am her
I know how that must make me seem desperate
but if I have to be someone else to make you love me
it is a price I am willing to pay.
Call me her name
if that will keep you with me
I don't care that you imagine her skin under your fingertips
it may make me pathetic
but my skin still longs for you.
Flip off the lights
if the darkness helps you want to stay with me
my eyes can adjust to blackness
but promise me you will tell me when you want to turn them back on
Lie to me
tell me that you didn't think of her this whole time
I know it isn't true
but the sting seems less when you pretend with me.

i liked the sentiment of 'you can't sleep' much better than this one. that's not to criticize this poem at all. it's very well written and expresses itself perfectly. it's just sad.
