Devices

A Poem by Sarah McKeever Hitt

The answers were given,
neither to me
nor to you.
so we ran away
as fast as we could.

It was not to be then
it is not to be now
So when will it be?
and will it ever be?

I can not say yes
and you aren't saying no.
We can't say anything
so we say nothing.

And as I try to forget
and you try to remember
neither of us are aware of
what we can't let go of
and what we can't hold on to.

It was a story of the ages
a story I couldn't read
and one you wouldn't write
it was wasted on us.

You were sure that I knew
and I was sure you didn't.
We are left to our own devices
trying to figure out the ending.

And now the chapters are closing
and the audience is thinning
and we are all that is left
waiting with baited breath for the other to speak.
