What kind of man would I be?A Poem by Sarah McKeever HittThey asked me where you were hiding? High in which tree? Beneath which rock? In the depths of which cave? Where are you, they ask?
I do not betray you. How could I you saved my life? How could I you gave me hope? How could I you sacraficed for me? How could I give your secret away?
They know I am hiding you. I am lying for you. I am denying for you. I am covering for you. How could I not, I ask?
I will not let them have you. How could I force you into their fire? How could I ensure he won't be there? How could I keep my baby sister safe? How could I let your world crumble?
They know I know more than I let on. What is his secret? Watch out for clues. He is bound to slip up eventually. When will he give us what we need?
The world will never know. What kind of man would I be to betray you? What kind of man would I be to turn you in? What kind of man would I be with my word worthless? What kind of man would I be then?
