Chuppa Chuppi

Chuppa Chuppi

A Poem by Prynka
"

Chuppa Chuppi - a local name for the game Hide and seek.

"

Where is Neil? Is he in the kitchen

Is he hiding behind the curtain

Or is he hiding under the table

I know you are playing this game.

But this is not done Dhya

It’s me whom you have to search.

You are playing the other way.

Dhya Dhya, I’m still searching for that ray.

Right from when I was in my Mamma's tummy

I heard you my dear granny.

The first time when we met, I know it was you.

Your tears that fell on me, were a few.

The day I came to your house.

It was decked up with my favorite Mickey Mouse.

You wrote my name in golden words.

In terrace we stood and saw the singing birds.

You made my mother sing.

Feeding me is her only sort of a hobby or something.

You made my Daddy dance

Who did well, all by chance,

If I was the apple of your eye.

You were the soul of my Ajja, who’s otherwise so shy.

I loved to snatch your lovely bindi

Few words I learnt from you, were in Hindi.

Every new game we played

Every new song we danced

You made me feel, I’m the prince

I keep thinking ever since

Why are you still playing that game?

You are supposed to search me and call my name.

Dhya Dhya please come back,

Now I can keep all my cars in a rack.

Author's Note

Prynka
My son was less than 2 years when he lost his granny. Ever since he was born, he was very attached to her. Their favorite game was to play hide and. First 3 lines is what she would tell while searching him.
I have penned down his thoughts what he might have felt after her sudden disappearance from his life.
Dhya is the first word he uttered and he was call her by that name
Ajja - grandfather

it is a deep personal poem. I don't even know what to say. I just wanna say thank you for sharing this poem. Also I think these days it very hard find out writers who write to express themselves... And you are one of them.

Thank you Akash for dropping by and for your review.:)
This is so painfully beautiful. Even without your note to reviewers, a sentient reader would be able to understand the theme of nostagia, childhood and bereavement. Heartbreaking when grandparents have to move on, leaving their beloved behind. What a poignant tribute to Dhya!

you are welcome mam. i totally agree with you.;))
This is brilliant in many ways with intriguing wordplay as well as conveying the playful relationship between g-mom & g-kid. I love that you used a real-life game that is a true part of your lives, yet it's such an endearing way to think about the loss of a beloved person in one's life. I love that you used your son's point of view, which is so well-done, I actually thought this was a true story about your own childhood. I try to remember to write in different points of view & this is a good inspiration for that. I love that you share interesting spots of India culture here, yet it's also relatable to anyone. One of the best poems I've ever read with a child's perspective! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Unfortunately my granny I lost before my birth. But my mom always keeps praising that mother in law like my granny was very fortunate to her. She used to take care of my mother and my elder brother just like you said with infinity love and care!!
I've no reason to miss her but only to think how beautiful my childhood could've been with such loving granny?!!
So feel like seeing her. Remember my mother's sayings. Thanks Prynka.
