Murmured Free Verse

trace the well-trodden way
surveyed and paved by legions
in macadam, cobbles
asphalt and mosaic

the going is easy
direction obvious
retracing your path
always an option

follow the faded footsteps
of invaders and refugee
explorer and missionary
sojourning bard and minstrel
analogue and shadow

there is no escaping a well-worn groove
so might as well pace lock and step
plough the treads deeper, darker

one day the rains will come
valley deep roads become river
course and habit washed away
migratory memory drowned in deluge
purpose and task lost in the flood

still, lyric and tattoo
haunt the lofty terraces
wind strums and syncopates cattails
whistles with the papyrus
murmurs free-verse in the reeds

Line by line you travel time. absorbing the world and its emotions along with your exploration of our planet's time. To hear you speak is a door quietly opening and calling a welcome from the future.

It's great to hear your audio blog. Always something of value to take away from your readings.

Once again the link wouldn’t play your video from me:( it is beginning to feel personal:/ however and this may be because I am so accustomed to your voice now I could hear you saying the lines as I read them:) this reminded me of a frequent dream I had when I was a child of a small village that was submerged in a lake the people that were there before the flood still lingered about their watery homes and they would tell me stories about their experiences

I could write a long story from the words above. The words like a circle of memories making us seek things lost and forgotten. Thank you dear friend for sharing your amazing poetry. I do enjoy.

Thank you, Coyote. Yes you have found something for me ... the remembrance. Thank you:)
Beautifully done, Pryde. Looking back and regretting things is very much like getting stuck in a rut while walking down the same path. It's always nice hearing your voice and the wisdom you share.

Thank you:)
The path is paved with blood, sweat and tears; wellworn for those who are newborn to adventure and risk taking.
We must walk, we must keep moving forward, we must enjoy the journey to self_ discovery and place discovery in this vast cosmos.
You write wisely and express joyfully.

You are welcome Pryde.
We are such creatures of habit, aren't we? Although taking the well worn path of least resistance does make sense, I often wonder of the more adventurous types just craving to choose their own path and if a hamster on a wheel ever thinks of running free in a non repeating cycle of freedom.
I think the older I get the more I am likely to agree on the well worn path making lighter work of the journey, but I do remember those days of my youth when we feel invulnerable and choose the riskier way.
It's a bit like reading little red riding hood to your grand kids, knowing what is to come and making sure they are awake to hear your warnings after of "do not walk through the woods yourself or a wolf will get you!" 😃
