Orion Splintered

springtime

in the northern kingdom

the Pleiades shelter behind the glare

of a temperamental solar veil

Orion hunkers down

spent from the chase

he bides his time …

a revolving piece of infinity

a glint of a grain

in splintered stardust sand

Orion vows …

his chance will come again

the light will fade

Aldebaran will fall to Bellatrix arrow

Taurus will finally yield the way

the huntsmen will have his pick of sisters

the seven laugh

the bull raises his horns in mirth

time is on the marksmans side

but still    he mutates like the rest

the growth will go supernova

Betelgeuse splint a shooting arm

in a gravitational sling

the mighty hunter will loose his aim

submit to inevitability ...

a revolving piece of infinity

a glint of a grain

in splintered stardust sand

There is an awful lot going on up there...they have their own grievances as we do down here.
I wonder if they do a better job of solving them...

They must...because even after their skirmishes the stars shine for such a long time....even after dying.
Wonderful piece, Pryde,

Hurrah, I finally got to hear this the first couple times I kept just getting ads:/ I love your voice in this poem and and in your reading I do the same thing when i look at stars I imagine the constellations moving about like gigantic moving sketches in the sky:) This piece is kind of interesting to me because I have been writing about time lately and thinking about Betelgeuse going supernova strikes a chord in that when and if we see it it would have happened long before it met our eye and sky. Please don't lose that spark of whimsy dear Pryde it is lovely to see

But you forgot to mention how purty they be looking! 😃
I really enjoyed this piece, especially the ending "a revolving piece of infinity
a glint of a grain
in splintered stardust sand."
It kinda does put us in our place as mere finite specks on a rock that must be a mere blip in comparison to them.

But yet it is our infinitely small mind that contains it all:)

Isn't human imagination a marvelous thing! And when combined with reality, poetry is made (or art in its many forms). We created myths from the reality of the stars, their positions, and what their positions allowed us to see, to imagine.

I for one am happy that Orion will never catch the Sisters! That the Sisters continue to escape his clutches gives hope that male domination (as it has evolved in reality) can be overcome. Perhaps an event like Betelgeuse going supernova (a social revolution) will be the catalyst for this.

Your poem is wonderful Pryde. It fuses mythology with reality in a way that is both entertaining as well as providing us with that "a glint of a grain in splintered stardust sand." Isn't "infinity" wonderful!!!!

You are welcome dear Pryde.
I studied history in a masters program for a couple of semesters and one of the concepts we touched on that fascinated me was the differing ways humans have defined historical time throughout the ages. Some things we take for granted as just being—like time itself, I think can be one thing. I found it interesting in your poem that there were these varying ways of thinking about time and its passing encompassed within. There are some circular and linear and even a sort of spiritual timeline ideas that I felt within the narrative.

Whatever we use to conceive of these things—myths or history or spiritual concepts—there are certainties like endings that are unavoidable. Even things as long lived as stars will eventually be consigned to darkness and dust. But your poem has a message beyond that I felt that was more positive that spoke to me of perseverance and hope. Hope in chances that are not yet visible but faith to know they will come. I really enjoyed this.

Just wonderful. Thank you, Pat:)
Astrological, mythical, metaphor, the complexity of this poem flows over the floodgates in raging torents. Wonderful rushs of overwhelming information fill the mind of the reader as time flys by.
