Mary Shelley is best known for Frankenstein, arguably one of the best novels ever written. If you haven't read it you should. Frankenstein's delivery of Naturalism themes is perhaps only rivalled by Emily Bronte with Wuthering Heights. Admiration of Shelley's prose brought me to take a look at what she did with poetry. Her husband Percy Shelley was a very well-known Romantic poet and she spent much of her life in support of his work. But I did find one piece. Stanzas could be mostly aptly defined as Romantic with its classical themes but there is a much deeper lying darkness that hints at Naturalism. Its four short stanzas do leave the reader wishing she had written a great deal more.

I have a theory about Shelley, as a writer she was much more skilled academically than her husband which is obvious however because she was a woman of her age, sought to conceal that to some extent, of course caution was thrown to the wind when Frankenstein was written, a short story at first, she knew that it had to be fed so the world could see, my theory is, is that she sought to show that woman could be as inventive as the men of the time and never really realised it, until of course after her death when people across the globe realised her intellect. I will forever long for more from the grave.

Her mother was in fact an early feminist and was instrumental in helping Percy 'compile' his pieces. Anyone who has actually read the novel and not just seen a movie or two … cannot help but be blown away with the writing in Frankenstein.
