Love's Penance.

Why doesn't love ever die?
And take with it the pain,
the urge, the expectation?
Why does it have to tug,
to lurch at the very thought?
of our lips blending and
our hands closing?
The lining of pain lurking
close behind, waiting
to plunge at the lightest word
submerging red in black.
I want it! Yet I hate it.
I love you! Yet I lose you.
