Sifting Memories

Sifting Memories

A Poem by Priyanka Natesh

What may be a fleeting glimpse

What may be an indifferent glance

A smile

A greeting

Gallantry in disguise?

Forget them not, young lads and misses

Forget them not, for the days are growin’ old

What may be a whoop with friends

What may be a bond of sorts

The laughs

The tears

Play of the hormones?

Forget them not, young lads and misses,

Forget them not, for the heart is growing ripe

What may be a first time on your own

What may be a blush, a flush you never know

A word of praise

A pat on the back

Forget them not, young lads and misses,

Forget them not, for the future is being carved

What may be fantasising thoughts

What may be a brimming pot of dreams

The stars in the eyes

Mind fixed to the skies

Forget them not, young lads and misses,

Forget them not, for life’s fortunes are calling

Whatever may be the hurdles and blocks

Whatever may be petty faults, morbid thoughts

The sores, bores

Guilt, remorse

Forget it not, only good memories prevail

Forget it not, what you sow, that you reap

Forget it not, destiny is at your heed

Forget it not, forget it not.

Hmm. I thought I read this. I guess not. :

Beautifully insightful. I was confused as to what message I was receiving from the poem as I read this, at first thinking it was a poem warning us that, in the end, when the heart has grown old and people have faded away, all that will remain of value are the seemingly minute memories one has created with one's friends; the little moments. Perhaps this is a theme embedded in it, but I came to realize as the poem advanced that it wasn't merely mentioning the expected, cliche memories of friendship and happiness, but also the memories one truly needs a reminder not to forget--the tears, as you put it, and the 'hurdles and blocks', 'morbid thoughts' (wonderful rhythm this poem has, by the way, and great job rhyming while maintaining sense and meaning)--because even these thoughts will play a role in the shaping of one's future, fortune, destiny. And, finally, in the last four lines, I picked up on an underlying karmic theme via the 'reaping what one sows' and 'only good memories prevail' (which I took to mean that, though the bad memories will bring forth certain things, it is only the good that will be able to conquer them. Otherwise, we will be continually plagued by the bad we reap). Very good advice, and well writ.

Oh no, no, no! There's no forgetting you missy! There's no forgetting us :)
Beautiful, melancholic remembrances that breathe such wisdom into our days.. past, present, and future. This is so lifting and light.
