Of Hardened Emotions

Of Hardened Emotions

A Poem by Priyanka Natesh
"

Somehow, the hardened shell seems to be a necessity

"

Is there any way

Of not loving you

Is there any reason at all

Any doubts, any fears?

No dearth of love

In my soul

You’ve found a place

Among countless others…

I am ready to submit, to unwound

To push the emotions,

to cascade into the empty within

can’t resist anymore

It’s happening!

Cascading into the schizophrenic dream alleys

                                                          ...

The beating heart swells to burst

The hardened shell resists

The yearning eyes plead to accept

The hardened shell resists

The longing hands reach out

The hardened shell resists

The aching lips smile

The hardened shell resists

So you see, you can’t see

the soft within

The hardened shell,

It resists.

A powerful and beautiful poem. Funny how love can twist us up and leave us weaker. I like the story in the poem and the very good ending.

Wow, I just read your "Happiness Blues" and have to see that I see a similar, even if more personalized, theme in this poem. I think this one is specifically applicable to the emotionally null, those whose shells have been hardened by past experience (wait, "past experience" is redundant, isn't it?) and resist the helping hands of the outside world, those who resist or refuse to admit emotions such as "love", who, perhaps, view such emotions as a hindrance to survival. There also seems to be an alternate story, one that details the emotional state of someone who, as humans innately do, desires the love from another, but is too afraid to accept it, hoping that the "other" would have the courage to slowly corrode the hardened shell and see the soft inside. But, alas, no one seems to possess such abrasion. They see a "hardened shell" and walk away, the exterior unscathed while the soft interior has been cut and stabbed. It reminds me of a shy person whose timidity prevents confession of love.

Great poem!

A lovely write Priyanka. The use of "The hardened shell resists" has been
handled so tastefully. Just love the way the story is narrated.
Kudos!!
P.S. No matter how much the hardened shell resists, at the end of the day doesn't it totally depend on us whether or not to give that person a chance for a place in our heart? :)
