Half Smiles

Half Smiles

A Poem by Priyal

Somewhere in between, say halfway down the lane

I halt, I look around, I wonder,

has it gone all in vain…

the hopes, the love, the surrender.

The stones I have kissed, the hearts I have slain

Dried petals that I carry, of redolent flowers put asunder

by treacherous winds of change.

Oh how much I once loved

those colorful bright mornings,

sunlit by some ‘divine electrician’,

but now all I see is ‘vibrant warnings’

too many colors impair my vision.

I believe what I doubted, I doubt what I believed

and it’s so hard not to question,

was it foolish having started to weave

this delicate ‘fabric of comprehension’.

So I kill my time, I stand, I wait,

I take no step front and no step back

till the dusk is done and the sun is set,

when the Queen rises, and the reign begins..

of an enchanting night that runs pitch black.

Here no one is rich, no one in debt

the more I devour the ‘light of wisdom’,

the more I lack.

It becomes insignificant to discriminate,

when all forms and shapes

dance together and shadows melt.

Darkness is not what I should be afraid,

or of an outright wolf attack.

Half-truths and half-lies,

with ‘half smiles’ to hide them well..

somehow they pose a bigger threat.

Deception is their way to persuade,

to make you willingly walk right into the trap.

I only get to see what they think will suffice,

to perfectly disguise

that ‘hypocritical smell’.

As night takes charge and marches ahead,

it takes me to a quick flashback

and I worry less as I realise…

we all go blind under Queen’s spell.

They get no shadows to hide what is meant and said,

neither they can find..

footprints on worn out tracks.

Ambiguity blunts their weapon of surprise

random shots never hit the bull’s-eye

Tired, annoyed and scared as hell,

as they fall asleep, I take a leap..

to walk all night, with surefooted strides.

Since I have mastered, I have never guessed..

where to put my next step,

when there is nothing to look at, I see my best!
