The Reunion

The Reunion

A Poem by Tom Friel

(Badaboom badabing
lets do this thing)

Meaningless chatter
Kodak smiles
Chick-like hugs
Lets linger
Awhile

Do you remember
              What became of
                              It’s been awhile since we
        Jimmy’s bald and fat now

(Badaboom badabing
Lets do this thing)

So you’re still living in
             Jan’s now working in
                            Whatever it takes to win
What’s your secret to staying thin

Badaboom badabing
Can’t do this thing
        Badaboom badabing
       Can’t do this thing

(From out of nowhere a flat husky voice resonates the crowded room)

"I’ve been very depressed lately,
I’ve even considered suicide"

(Dead silence)

(Sympathetic looks, heads begin to turn… away)

Quietly, the white noise of meaningless chatter, slowly and thankfully, begins again. The drinks flow as empty bottles crowd the kitchen table. Children of classmates happily parade through the rooms dressed in their Halloween attire. A little early for Halloween but an autumn chill was definitely in the air.
