A Poem by Tom Friel

Old photos
Line the dusty windowsill
Plastic fruit
Lays forever
Uneaten
Next to mother’s pills
Certain photos never lie
And certain little girls
Never miss meals
And certainly
Little boys
Never confuse
The vague
Importance
Of something
When it’s real
Underneath
A sadness
Masked
In this
Lifelong class
Waiting
To raise one's hand
Yearning
To please
The guilt
That lowers the hand
Again and again
