We Remember, John

We Remember, John

A Poem by Tom Friel

We remember
the very instant,
where we were,
what we were doing.
How we heard,
how we ached.

We remember
the news reports,
the photos, forever
ingrained images.
All bearing witness
to the suffering and death.

Imagine there's no heaven, it's easy if you try, No hell below us, above us only sky. Imagine all the people living for today.

We remember an era
of innocence,
real or perceived,
it was an era
we can never
return to.

We remember
feeling vulnerable,
fearing for loved ones.
We remember
feeling angry,
raising the flag,
wearing the flag.
Some turned red,
white and blue,
right before our eyes.

Imagine there's no countries, it isn't hard to do, Nothing to kill or die for, no religion too, Imagine all the people living life in peace.

We remember so much
but what have learned?
There are still car bombs,
and suicide attacks
and sons and daughters lost,
everyday.

Maybe we've learned
that you can’t change
centuries of faith.
Maybe we've learned
that genius consists
of knowing when to stop
the force feeding
of happy meals
and American idols.

Imagine no possessions, I wonder if you can. No need for greed or hunger,  a brotherhood of man. Imagine all the people - sharing all the world.

Maybe we've learned
something about the word
    democracy.
Maybe we've learned
   democracy
cannot be bought or sold.
   Democracy,
in essence,
can only be earned.

You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. I hope some day you'll join us, and the world will live as one.
