Christmas Past

Christmas Past

A Poem by Tom Friel

All I remember
Was the camera flashing
Nine years ago
Forever imprinting that
Deer in the headlight look
Of me
Staring blindly
Alongside
The family tree

Nine years later
A little grayer
A little wider
They all laugh and chuckle
As they look
Through old photo albums

Eventually
They spot me
And all agree
“You haven’t changed a bit!”

I pause and stare
For laughs and chuckles
And realize Christmas
Is all about the past
