Saved By The Bell

Saved By The Bell

A Poem by Tom Friel

Something happened
On his way to perdition
He was lost in a crowd
And no one would listen

Convinced he was empty
His hunger was real
He sat on the grass
He ate an orange peel

His feet they were tired
His shoes they were worn
His thirst hellacious
His spirit forlorn

In the distance a cry
In the distance he heard
The cries of young children
Filled the air like young birds

A joy filled his heart
His thirst for now quenched
He yelled  for no reason
I own this park bench!

The screaming soon stopped
Both directions now still
The playground was empty
The walk was up hill

Your poem reads like a story. Building up from the beginning towards the empty park which puts the finger on the very problem: most people run from the homeless. Most people feel awkward and do not know how to behave around homeless people, even children. Everybody seems to be in denial, they do not want to be there ... Their own fears make them run away. Your work ilustrates this perfectly.

The flow of this poem is very easy for a reader to follow, and I like that it reads like a story. You demontrated a good use of grammar in this poem as well. I particularly liked the lines "He yelled for no reason/I own this park bench!" Nicely written poem. Thank you for sharing your writing on The Cafe, and I look forward to reading more of your writing in the future.
