Pictures of War

Pictures of War

A Poem by Tom Friel

Humiliate
Embarrass them
Strip them of their pride
Let the world
See their misery
Their hate you cannot hide

Indifference
Like a stench
Permeates this giving tree
Democracy
And freedom
Bear fruits of power's greed

Moral stains
Spun and dried
Washed free from patriotic cloth
Speechless images
Prod tortured souls
We tow to fears now fought

Solemnly
Methodically
Soldiers arrive back home
Draped neatly
In their coffins
Returned to those alone

Each picture
Tells a story
Worth a thousand words
Inexcusable
Sick, atrocious
Still the truth gets blurred

How quickly
Words can fade away
An image somehow last
Imprinted
On our souls it seems
A reminder of the past
