Stifled Emotions

Stifled Emotions

A Poem by Priscilla Sayers
"

Inspired by Aldous Huxley from the book "A Brave New World".

"
Conscious school of thought,
drilled into our minds,
avoiding socialization to become "corrupt",
we are the puppets if we accept the "Master".

Emotions to be in reserve,
shown with descretion,
passion has it's time...
Its place.

IMAGINE

If one is kept calm by receiving first each need,
fullfilled,
immediately as the need arises...

Would you ever know want, pain, or distress?
How about hope...
Where would she be if she has never been introduced to the soul?
Her only way of existing is through...
NEED
PAIN, DISTRESS
WANT...

Then the strong rises,
through the constant knowledge that they have always needed,
always felt pain, distress and are always left lacking,
wanting.

Hope is born.

Love now.
Live now, beyond the expectations of society but through the dreams that gleam in a child's eyes.
Live with the strong belief that there is always hope and no one dictates who you are...
Unless you let them.

Really thought provoking. Emotions are sooooo much of who and what we are. Yet how are we to be with them, esp when they can destroy us? How do we get the balance right? Maybe the whole of Shakespear is about the result of these imbalances between reason and emotion. Then poor old Marcus Aurelius seemed to think we should ingnore pain and pleasure, that they mislead us. But it we followed Marcus' view we wld be intert. Perhaps that is how we English became. On the other hand who wants to live in the chaos of a Shakespearean drama? And so, do we ever really know what is best? Too much emotion and we can be unbearably selfish, too little and we are diminishing oursleves and those around us. I wonder if our emotions are less sharp beyond say, 18-38? Do our emotions fade, just as our hearing does and our hair greys? Maybe some people are glad when this happens. Perhaps the mind takes over move once the emtions fade. Maybe it is good when they fade as they can be dangerous to the rest of the body, all that pulsating blood. Or are they good for the body? Does the rush of blood ensure we stay vital for longer? Ach! No closer!
