A Poem by Tami
"

Some youth in our church teamed up to speak about Social Issues affecting the community. My issue: Teenage Pregnancy.

"
I'm Pregnant!
And no I didn't St- stutter.
I'm pregnant.
Name: Josei Smith
Age: 19
Category: Teenage Pregnancy.
Statistic #: 44538
I'm pregnant
But NO
I'm not married.
And yes I do know who the father is.
I'm pregnant.
Ohhh I'm sorry
Does that make you uncomfortable, you don't want to talk about it, you just want to overlook it Right?
WRONG!
I'm pregnant!
I want you to think about it! I WANT you to look at it!
It's a problem. Teenage pregnancy is a problem.

Does that make you uncomfortable? You don't want to talk about it? You just want to overlook it Right?
WRONG!

Fact: There is an average of 700 Bahamian Teenage girls that become pregnant each year.

Fact: 20% Of these girls will become pregnant again.

Does that make you uncomfortable, you don't want to talk about it, you just want to overlook it Right?
WRONG!

This is problem! We have a problem! The Bahamas has a problem! 700 islands and beautiful cays has a problem!

Problem definition something that is difficult to deal with : something that is a source of trouble, worry, etc.

Problem. WE have a problem! Teenage pregnancy is a problem. It's something that is a source of trouble, worry etc. And YES it is difficult to deal with.

But we have to solve this problem. We have to SPE-AK about this problem we have.

I'm pregnant.

Does that make you uncomfortable, you don't want to talk about it, you just want to overlook it Right?
WRONG!

I am pregnant! We have a problem! We have a problem to solve! We must begin SOLVE this problem.

Solve definition : find an answer to, explanation for, or means of effectively dealing with a problem.

It's my wish, my Christmas wish that we work toward solving this problem.

We must Teach our children God's rules. We must Teach them what they have to do prevent this problem! Teach them what God wants from them so that we don't HAVE this problem.

Deuteronomy 11:19-20 “You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.  You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Teach Them!
That's all it takes to solve this problem. Teach them.

Teaching definition impart knowledge to or instruct (someone) as to how to do something.

Teach them!

Teaching, that's all it takes for my Christmas wish to come true.

Can you-
Can-
Can you help me? I'm begging you to help me! I need you to help me. I just want to make my wish come true.

I just want us to teach our children. So that we stop the problem from before it begins.

Please.

Why?

Because I don't like the looks. The stares they hurt me. They cut me. I can hear the whispers you're not speaking that soft.

You don't have to shun me. I already am. My family...they don't help. My friends they don't.... Care. Yea, I know who my baby's father is but he's not really there.

I should be ashamed! OK! I get it!

And I'm not pregnant......but what if I was? Would you help me? Or would would you scorn me? Would I disgust you? Would my pregnancy disgust you?

What if she was was pregnant? I'm talking about your daughter. Yea. Her. Your little angel. Ya one good daughter. Would you help me? Or would you scorn your? Would she disgust you? Would her pregnancy disgust you?

Would you help her? Me? Them....Would you do me the honor of granting my chritsmas wish?

Author's Note

Tami
Please ignore Grammar. I just wrote it on my phone real quick.

Also, I don't want to make it seem like being a teenager and pregnant is the worst thing that happen....because it's not.

But, we have to agree that when a teenager becomes pregnant without notice it leads to some problems that could be avoided if parents and elders in the community didn't play around with sex education and what it REALLY means to have a child.
