Just Another Day On The Job

Switch off ignition, heave out a breath

Hands, white-knuckled, grip the wheel

Never have I seen such a death

Here to tell poor Jane the whole ordeal

Tell her that I found her youngest girl,

Bloodied – broken; sending her life awhirl

If only it had been some other teen…

And why can I still hear her scream?

Pocket thrumming, awoken by my cell

Trembling, I stare blankly at the screen

Calling is my darling daughter Elle

The only other member of our team

Laughing, she sees right through my lies

When asked if I’m alright, her

Voice tells me there’s a smile in her eyes

Sending my very own into a blur

Now stronger through reassuring words,

I grab my badge; glancing in the mirror,

I say a prayer of thanks to the Lord

For each day I have with my daughter

Wow, very nice poem, sad and harsh, but also filled with flowing words and emotion. I loved it very much :)
