Nocturne

Nocturne

A Poem by lemon_zest

“Nocturne”

The night is my veil

A bleak refuge, I call sanctuary

Silhouettes consumed by wanderlust

Cavorting in the dim streets

A hapless tango

Between man and beast

Can you hear them?

A rat traipsing beneath the floorboards

Feet, light and stealthy

In search of morsel

A haggard tramp scuffling with a local grocer

Hoarding treasure,

The Remnants of a bruised apple

A mother’s passion

Protective, violent if need be

Prepared to defend her den.

A woman’s desperation

Skittish yet tenacious

To end the violence directed towards her young.

Can you smell it?

 Not the Cheap vodka

Lingering from the breath.

Nor the pools of crimson

Matted on tendrils of hair

Beneath the underneath,

The cry of a distressed soul

The night is my veil.
