Your Defender

Your Defender

A Poem by Kaitlin Siobhan

i run to catch up
and every time i drop down
i need to push myself up
even when my arm's hurt
when they shake from the pressure
i've been goin at this too long
and i can't stop now
every time i sit up i breath in
fall down, i breathe out
i've gotta push myself
their words in my head
"be all you can be"
but what they crave for
they need you to be more
they threw me to the chambers
poisoned my lungs
gagging and puking when i was tryin to speak
while my mind is screaming at me to move my feet
and the tears burn
as the run down my face
this i my turn
to show that what you give i can take
put that m16 in my hand
and i'm out to defend this land
i'm a soldier for the soil you walk on
for the air that you breathe
for the country you see
i'm giving up my life
to make sure that you live to see another day
i stand up for what i believe in
our rights and your lives
and if that means takin a bullet
by their rifles i'll die
and no, i don't follow our leaders
i don't believe in this war
but it's not the government
or the men and women who govern it
it's this country and it's people
that i give my life for
