‬Isaiah 55:8-9 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts”

Do you understand your spouse? I sure don't, although I really wish I could. I often find myself shaking my head at his reasoning as I try to figure out how in the world his brain works. I heard someone explain it beautifully by saying, “Men’s brains are like waffles; women’s are like spaghetti!”

Isn’t that a wonderful analogy? It doesn’t make me understand him any better. It just makes me understand why I don’t understand him better. Men and women just don’t think alike, nor do we do things in the same way.

If I can’t understand my husband, whom I know better than any other person in my life, how in the world can I expect to understand God? God says of Himself that His thoughts are not our thoughts, and His ways are different from ours as well.

If I can remember, when trouble comes, that God is good, that He loves me, and that He has a plan and a purpose for my life, that’s a great beginning. But I won’t have peace or serenity unless and until I accept that there are some things I will never be able to understand.

Until you and I accept that basic truth, we’re probably going to have a hard time letting go of those things and trusting God to work them out according to His will rather than our own. If I choose the insanity of trying to understand the “why” of every situation, surrendering my will is going to be impossible.

All the trite sayings about how we use electricity without understanding it won’t help us one single bit when our prodigal has been arrested again. It won’t reassure us when we have found him drunk or using drugs when we were so hopeful all that was in the past.

It won’t help us when we’ve prayed and cried until there are no more words and no more tears, and our prodigal still hasn’t come home. And we for sure won’t understand. How can we?

When people are kids, it seems they always ask, “Why?” Why do I have to do this? Why is homework necessary? Why does it hurt when I fall down? They want answers. As they grow older, the questions became more complex, and they still want answers.

Why is there pain in this world? Why did my spouse leave? Why did my friend betray me? Why did my kids break my heart? In striving to understand the things that defy reason, I think we’re sometimes more to blame for our own unrest, bewilderment and pain than our prodigal is.

Trusting God in the dark for what He’s shown Himself to be in the light will help us to trust Him when we don’t understand. However, we aren’t going to trust Him in the hard times if we haven’t first accepted that we won’t always understand what He’s doing or why.

Perhaps the pathway to peace in the worst of circumstances starts with the small step of realizing and accepting that we won’t always understand…and the reason for that lack of understanding is because God’s thoughts are above our thoughts and His ways are higher than our ways.

Challenge for Today: What might happen if we, just for today, let go of that desperate need to understand all the things that are happening in our lives?
