Go To: preciousprodigal.com - - - - - Habakkuk 3:19 “The Lord God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places.” Dear Susan: Watching someone you love self-destruct is tough, so I’m not surprised that you’re feeling overwhelmed. But you and I aren’t the only ones struggling with something in our lives. While we can’t always know what a family is facing, I can say with assurance that all of them are struggling with something. Their problems may be different from ours, but it’s a universal truth that “Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble.” (Job 14:1) Like the rest of us who are facing a mountain, you may be saying, “I can’t do this!” and who could blame you for feeling that way? Mountains can be pretty scary. So how can you and I even begin to face the mountain looming in front of us? There are some basic truths about our mountains that may help you as they have helped me. The first thing is that we’re not there by accident. Both Psalm 18:33 and 2 Samuel 22:34 tell us that God has “set us there” on those high, seemingly precarious places. And the God who loves us and calls us by our name and says that we are His doesn’t make mistakes. (Isaiah 43:1) Whether we understand it or not, being there is part of God’s plan for our lives. And God’s plan for your life and mine isn’t to harm us but to give us hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11) The second thing is that those mountains are personal. For years I misquoted Habakkuk 3:19. I knew that verse promised God would “make my feet like hind’s feet…able to walk on high places.” While that’s true, it doesn’t go far enough. That verse actually says God will “make me to walk on my high places,” and it’s referring to that mountain unique to me. This isn’t some impersonal God who gives all of us the same “hind’s feet” like four tires on a Chevrolet! It’s much more personal than that. God looked down the corridors of time and saw the mountain each of us would have to climb…that mountain of cancer, that mountain of divorce, that mountain of loving a prodigal…yes, that’s the one. God already knew about it, and He gave you and me exactly what we would need to walk those high places that are unique to us. The last truth about mountains is that they are bigger than we are. All of them. Even though God placed us there, even though he gave us “hind’s feet” uniquely designed for us. You may have heard people say, “God never puts more on us than we can handle.” It’s a great thought, but it’s just not true. God often puts more on us than we can handle. Having said that, I hasten to add that He never puts more on us than He can handle. We can’t do this in our own strength, Susan, and that’s the key. The strength to climb those mountains, to walk those paths has to come from Him, and that strength has a 24-hour expiration. It has to be renewed daily. In Letters to Malcolm: Chiefly on Prayer, C.S. Lewis said it well: “Relying on God has to begin all over again every day as if nothing had yet been done.” God’s got this, Susan. He really does. And our part is to trust Him and face that mountain in His strength alone. Challenge for Today: What might happen if we, just for today, realized we are able to walk on our high places if we rely on God’s strength?
