Habakkuk 3:19 “The Lord God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places.”

Trouble comes to all of us, and people who read my blog aren’t doing it because things are wonderful in their lives. I know the Scriptures tell me to “cast all my cares on [Christ]…” (I Pet 5:7), and Psalm 61:2 tells me I can cry out to God, and He will “lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” I know those things…at least I knew them yesterday.

But it isn’t easy to apply those truths when we’re climbing another mountain. And many of us, myself included, are doing exactly that with no guarantees as to the outcome. That can be terrifying and, no matter how God proved I could trust Him yesterday, I often find myself overwhelmed with fear today.

It might be a diagnosis of cancer, a spouse who abandoned us, or a prodigal who has broken our hearts. Some of those things are so devastating that people won’t understand how all consuming that struggle can be. And how could they unless they have climbed that same mountain?

Like me, you might sometimes ask yourself if even God really knows and understands your struggles. Meditating on that and wrestling with things I should have already let go of took me to Habakkuk 3:19 this morning. And I saw it as never before.

I knew that verse promises to “make my feet like hinds’ feet…able to walk on high places.” However, I saw for the first time today that those “high places” are my high places. It isn’t just some random high place where God will make our feet sure and steady. It’s those high places unique to you…unique to me.

That mountain of cancer, that mountain of divorce, that mountain of loving a prodigal…yes, that’s the one. God already knew about it. He never put His almighty hand on His face and said, “Wow! I never saw THAT coming!” God knew about your high place; He knew about mine. And those are the very mountains He will make us able to walk.

A mountain is just a mountain, of course, and all mountains belong to God. So the mountain isn’t the problem. It’s our trying to climb that mountain in our own strength that has us stumbling and tripping, hurting ourselves and cheating ourselves of the victory. Edmund Hillary, one of the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest said, “It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.” And he’s right. We aren’t going to conquer that mountain if we try to do it in our own strength.

Regardless of the mountain you’re climbing today, the God of the mountain can make you walk with “hinds’ feet.” However, the strength He gives us has a 24-hour expiration date. In Letters to Malcolm: Chiefly on Prayer, C.S. Lewis said it well: “Relying on God has to begin all over again every day as if nothing had yet been done.” I’m glad that “His mercies are new every morning.” (Lam 3:23)

However high the mountain, however hard the path, God’s got this. Really, He does. And reminding myself that He is able to make me walk on my high places might give me the courage to do it…just for today.

Challenge for Today: What might happen if we, just for today, stopped struggling and started relying on the God of our mountain?
