'' Dark Skies ''

'' Dark Skies ''

A Story by Dwayne J. Keeves
"

A young boy name Cody must keep his little sister Mary safe while attempting to get to shelter. After discovering they are on the farm alone, he takes on the young role of his father.

"

It's a very fair day '', Cody thought , as he rose from his bedside wiping his eyes. He stumbled

over to the window looking out . He could hear his mother's voice calling out to him from the bottom

of the stairway. The smell of bacon, and eggs filled the air, and he knew his mother's call was a

breakfast call ! Heading for the bathroom, Cody saw his sister Mary turn the corner shuting the

bathroom door. Cody banged on the door . '' Hurry UP ,Mary ! '' Soon the door swung open , and

Cody ran in .

After breakfast, Cody and Mary went outside to help their father with the farm chores .

Cody's family lived in Texas , and there were many , many chores to be done living on a farm .

Mary and her mother would feed and water the chicken, as well as collect the eggs .

Cody helped his father in the cow pasture . Placing blocks of salt in the empty salt boxes that need

them for the cows to lick. Soon their task was over but, after a cold drink of ice-tea , Cody and Mary

raced out the door again , destined for the treehouse .Cody was the first to reach the playhouse

growing in the tree. Gale , the faithful ranch dog came hitting hard in second place ,while Mary

paced in third place .They both climbed the ten steps to the treehouse finding their cat Fluffy, lying at

ease on the soft pillow in a corner .

Cody and Mary stretched across the floor , gathering coloring markers, colored pencils , and paper

from a desk . '' Let's see who can draw the best picture ! '' Cody said to Mary .

'' Okay ! '' agreed Mary ; '' but don't get upset if my picture looks better !''

From the window Cody could see their father working on his tractor in the barn . From the

distance he could hear the sound. Ping ! Ping ! Ping !.... Cody noticed his father leaving in the truck .

'' Hmmm! Dad must needed a new part for the tractor !'' he said to Mary .

As time eased by , they compared pictures and surely as Mary said ; her pictures did indeed turn out

more appealing than Cody's . Paper lay in the floor like carpet , as Cody noticed the wind rush in the

window. Looking out , the grass which stood tall in the open field now bowed to the breeze that came

over the land . The windmill , that stood beside the barn began to spin in a frantic manner . Soon the

sky became a jacket of black marble , rippled with streaks of white . Cody could see the fear in Mary's

eyes . He couldn't dare let his little sister think he was just as afraid as she was .

'' Mom , and dad both ,went into town ! '' said Cody to Mary . The thunder '' ROARED '' over

head . The lightning flashed dancing across the now silky tone sky . '' We must make our way to the

storm cellar '' Cody said . '' I hope mom and dad is coming '' said Mary to Cody .

Cody went down the ladder of the treehouse first . He reached up to help his sister down . The wind

seemed to force them backwards as they pressed to make it to the storm cellar . Safety looked miles

away although it was just yards from the treehouse . Just as the rain rushed across the field ,Cody and

Mary made it to the cellar . Once inside, Cody and Mary could see their parents driving down the

drive-way. The wind pushing rain , leaves in front of the truck . Cody's father was very proud of him

the way he took good care of his sister . They stood in the doorway, watching mother nature display

her wonders across the sky. Cody could see his sister hung to their mother like glue .

''The wind is getting high !'' said Cody. He watched the windmill spin around ,and around, one last

time and closed the door .

The End !
