Eyes to the Horizon

Eyes to the Horizon

A Poem by PrairiePenguin
"

I haven't written poetry in some time and I am trying to do something very meta with this piece. The basic idea is a person sailing across the sea, encountering spirits that he entrusts to guide him.

"
Onto the Ocean (Part 1)
Since he was a young boy, he was told
One day you will go onto to the sea
You will find her spirits, and one of them will fill your soul
He was eager more than most to cast away
He want to see the beauty of what laid beyond the horizon
One fateful day, the boy, nearly a man, set sail looking
his small raft, had barely enough sail to catch the gusts, yet he did not dismay
Days turn to night, and back into day, he could see the sparkle of the spirits
They were gorgeous beyond compare, but fear led him to stay the course, not willing to run his raft asunder

Sapphire and Wheat (Part 2a)
Many moons passed, the boy had built his raft larger, making it more sturdy
Then he saw her, a spirit swirling in hues of sapphire blue and waving wheat.
Quickly pulling on the reins of his craft, yanking it towards her.
The spirit waited patiently for him to come, her intent never wavering from him.
Slowly he approached her, afraid of what could be
She spoke with an ethereal voice, "Do you wish I sail with you?"
"Yes," his breathe catching deep in his chest
"You know I will control the waves underneath your craft?"
Fear rising, only a head nod could he give.
 "now breathe in"
He filled his lungs deep with her essence.
Heart pounding, excitement ever growing, he turned his eyes to the horizon
never more hopeful than this moment.
