Dowry

Dowry

A Poem by pragya gaur
"

I just wrote it while drinking coffee...I know it may be not up to the mark but nowadays it is the biggest problem of our country so I wrote to aware few of them

"
The worst thing given by our ancestors,
Is that of taking dowry.

I don't understand why was this invented,
And how foolish are those who blindly follow it.

What will you take from that man,
Who has already given you all that he had.

What will that poor man give you,
Who has given the corner of this heart to you.

What else can that father give you,
Who has already given his child to you.

When you are already getting bride of your choice,
Then what is the need of taking wealth along it.

If you are not able to earn what you want,
Then why do you want someone else thi give it.

If you want to show off,
Then do hardworking and earn it.
What is the need of taking it from others,
And tell others that you own it.

Make your son able to give you all comforts,
Don't wait for his marriage to give you all this.

Her father is not giving you to her,
Because she is a pressure to him.
He is giving you because,
She will be the part of your happiness and sins.

Stop torturing that girl because,
Her father didn't earn well.
Stop taking dowry, stop begging

Hello Pragya! Your poem is so relevant and important. Dowry is a custom that should be illegal because it puts a price on womens’ heads. It treats them as chattel and property as you so well express, and weighs too heavily on the poor. Perhaps it was needed at one time in India’s history, but not humane in today’s world. Your words are perfect and powerful and the form, flow and cadence are lovely. Your message is one that should be heard. Brava!

WOW! I always enjoy a written piece that helps me understand other cultures I’m not familiar with. I’ve always been familiar with dowries, but in your poem, you do a great job of painting many family pictures in words, so we can better understand how this custom really goes between people. You use good examples explained clearly. Our TV programming includes a show called “90-day Fiancee” (a foreign person becomes engaged to an American person & they have 90 days to get married or the foreign person can no longer get a green card). In this show, I’ve seen the American pay a dowry – after reading your poem, now I can better see how this would be unfair, when rich people from other countries marry the eligible ones becuz they have the money, whereas poor locals maybe do not. Good to use your writing as lessons about the world to teach us how to look at things with wisdom (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I agree. Love isn't dowry. Love is the feeling of love between two people. Old world is still holding on in some places. Thank you Pragya for sharing the amazing poetry and your thoughts.

Yes, I think it was the wealthy who saw their daughters as 'commodities.' I think they were often more interested in the joining of the two families. Is this still a common practice? You say you wrote the poem while drinking a cup of coffee. Well, you poured your feelings out in a very touching way. I hope many people read this. well done.

Thanks a lot for the review ma'am
As far as i have ready, the origin of dowry was among the upper castes (pandits) and wealthy ones..but with time, it got place among the poor ones as well (because, sadly, poors try to following customs made by riches; stop imitating, would i say?)..good insight into the concept and very pertinent one :)
