From Grandson to Grandfather

From Grandson to Grandfather

A Poem by Pragya Vishnoi
"

This poem is based on John Grisham's novel-'The Chamber'.It is written to death row inmate Sam Cayhall from his grandson Adam Hall who also happens to be his lawyer.

"
Grandfather Sam Cayhall

I had always thought
that the elderly roof of
the family house was missing
until I learnt of your existence
Mr. Cayhall.
I was shocked at first at the very
thought of being related to
a living Klanman
but you always kept pulling
me,I don't know why.

You were always heartless,Sam,you know.
You have killed my father Eddie
and destroyed Lee's life.
You were devil personified,Sam,
without ever allowing the soothing
breeze of kindness and compassion
touch your heart.
Hadn't you thought of Eddie,
when you orphaned Quince Lincoln?
Had not your soul got pinched
by a single thought of me
when you let John and Josh Kramer
die?
Didn't your conscience felt the burden of lynching's guilt?
I hate you Sam
and you got exactly what you deserved.

But if you hadn't possessed a heart
why I had seen a hidden sparkle of affection in your
eyes for me?
If you had no thoughts for Eddie,
how could you recognize his son
by voice without ever seeing him before.
If you hadn't love Lee why
hadyou always wanted to
see her before you die.
If you had no remorse, then why had you
written letters of apology to Lincoln and Cramer family
without giving a single try to arouse their sympathy for you.
You were not heartless,dear Sam,
because if you were
you would never sacrifice your life to save your family
from the accomplice.

You had always been a man of great dignity.
You also had
deep loves
innocent deams
childish desires.
You were just me
trapped in wrong situations
among wrong peopleand
making the most wrong choices.

I want you to live and
we would spend afternoons
together gardening and
evenings chatting over tea.
I need you to pat me with pride whenever I win a case
and if I lose, you would say,"Don't mind,it happens my child."
I don't want to lose you dear Grandpa.
Please don't die,
come back to live with your Alan, please I beg.
And lastly,
I love you Grandpa and will always do so.

Yours
Adam Hall/Alan Cayhall
