You Don't Get to Walk Away

You Don't Get to Walk Away

A Poem by Leviathus Fortes

Can you ever really forgive
If you never can forget
Unable to push memories away
To hide them in your mind

I don't have that luxury
Photographic, yes, it is
Control this, I cannot
What to do with such a brain

Analyze and also ponder
And to do it for all time
It's not a blessing, far beyond it
A burden I must bear

Every conversation, every single word
Tone of voice, body language too
A wretched gift I did not ask for
So simply I must scribe

Is the writing therapeutic
I cannot manipulate my own mind
Change events to soothe emotions
I'm not like the rest of you

In a heartbeat, I'd be willing
To trade my brain for yours
And ignore those things that happened
Yet they shall always be with me

If I'm to be reminded
Of each and every day
You don't get to be free
I will always follow you
