That Moment

That Moment

A Poem by Leviathus Fortes

Why do I overthink some things
Can I not let my mind rest
Or is questioning for answers
What my mind does best

I hate to ask the question "why"
Yet I find value in a clue
I want to know what's really there
What's genuine, what's true

The words that speak emotion
From deep within the heart
Later ignored or they forgotten
But for me, they do not part

So answer to me honestly
Did you mean the words you said
Or were they at empty, spoken impulsively
Irrelevant and buried dead

I know that you're embarrassed
And maybe even scared
That you said those words to me
And felt like I had not cared

The way that I responded
Was that I agreed with you
Not about myself, not at all
I meant the way I feel for you

Is it too late to bring the subject up
Have you moved on with your days
Or can I tell you that I was going
To speak to you that exact same phrase

I wish I'd said it, right then and there
So confusion had no hold
Do we go on with our separate lives
And ponder this moment when we're old

Please speak to me about this
Don't keep this bottled up inside
Did you mean it, did you really
It's time we both swallow our pride

Is it because you said it to me first
Now you act like it was not, or had it ever been
I want to say it back to you
For me, that moment's not forgotten
