Irrepressible

Irrepressible

A Poem by Polly Lewis

Irrepressible

The fingers of life’s regenerating essence trace my emotions like fluttering wings,
They stroke my sorrow, strong and defiant, wiping away the insistent pain,
At first I seek peace, lost in blissful seclusion. My comfort in rivers of tears,
But just like the warmth of a lover’s embrace they heal the core of my dreams,

I wake from the ocean of crippling darkness, no longer afraid of your name,
My future is strange, yet without understanding I’m ready to meet the unknown,
Choices expand as they stretch out before me, calling me forth from despair,
And as I move forward and open my eyelids I welcome the visions I see,

Restored and renewed I step into the sunlight, locking your love deep within,
And hiding the damage while treating the cause, I learn to weather the storm,
Forgetting is hard and extremely unlikely, knowing the power you hold,
So all I can do is rely on my instincts when next I choose to believe,

Anger is futile and offers no answers yet still it has served its own purpose,
I now see the truth through the hours of chaos and carry my hope like a shield,
The lessons you taught me will not go unheeded, but help me to see what is real,
For when I am healed and the timing is right; I will know all that love can achieve.

Nice work, it made me feel the emotion and the desires of hope lost, lesson learned.

Polly, for a new writer you expressed this poem beautifully and artfully. I loved the meter and flow of it and the arrangement of the words was very gripping and drew your attention to the subject of each graceful line. If this is the measure of things to come, and since you lend your talent to investigating all areas of life in your work, you are sure to become a star. Thank you.

I read this through once, then scanned back and enjoyed reading just the inset words, sort of like a shorthand version of the piece. The repetition of sentence structure became a bit overwhelming and predictable, but perhaps it works anyway in this piece, and somehow portrays the title. I wonder if you meant to leave the inset word off of line 12? I wish "believe" were inset, to keep that repetition going, since that is the structure throughout the poem.
Your first two lines are rich, especially the idea of Life's "fluttering wings" stroking your sorrow. I love that your sorrow is "strong and defiant", and I enjoyed the journey toward your restoration. I look forward to reading more of your work!
