2 ~ EMPLOYMENT

Rune sat shivering on the sidewalk.  Behind the steady stream of people she looked like a rock in a river. To keep her feet warm, she wiggled her toes in her tennis shoes.  If she moved her foot enough someone walking by could have seen the hole in the toe of one shoe, but no one looked over.  Rhythmically, her breath became fog in front of her nostrils.  She had lost the man, she was sure of it.  He would never find her here.

Fighting the cold, she huddled herself into her sweatshirt.  Nests of unkempt red hair were the only visible part of her.

A tall man gripped his jacket as he walked.  A hat cast shadows over his face.  His walk was brisk and deliberate, but nothing conspicuous.  His hand sunk into his pocket.  He muttered something as he walked by the young woman, who jerked upright when she felt something shoved into her sweatshirt pocket.

She looked around frantically, but none of the sidewalk goers alarmed her.  The tall man’s brisk gait had carried him out of range of the woman’s suspicions.  Slowly she relaxed, and taking one last glance around her, investigated the new weight in her pocket.

Her hand emerged holding a sleek black cell phone.  Her eyebrows closed together for a moment, almost in disgust.

        “What the --”

Her hand jerked and lost grip of the small metal device, which plummeted to the ground.  Looking around quickly, she winced at her new degree of conspicuity.  Grabbing it off the ground, her hand jerked again.  It was vibrating.  Steady now, she opened its thin frame.  A message popped up on the screen telling her she had a new text.  She touched her face and frowned subtly, skeptical.  She pressed “okay” to read it.

        MESSAGE youre hired

        Rune’s face brightened.

“Employment,” she breathed.  It didn’t take long, however, for her face to darken with skepticism.  “Where, how?  Who?” she whispered at the cell phone.  It vibrated and she flinched noticeably before opening it.

        “Who in crimony are you?”

The cell phone answered her quickly.

        DATE 3.28

        TIME 13:02

        MESSAGE your new boss

Rune’s face paled as she let the cell phone fall out of her hand.

“It can hear me,” she realized, drifting.  The cell phone buzzed, spinning slow circles on the wet sidewalk.  Rune ignored it.

The cell phone continued to buzz.

Frustrated, Rune snatched the phone off of the ground and opened it.  There were two new messages.

        FROM applicationsscarcity

        DATE 3.28

        TIME 13:02

        MESSAGE yes

        FROM applicationsscarcity

        DATE 3.28

        TIME 13:04

MESSAGE do you want the money or not

Rune hesitated before doing anything.  She stared down at the little screen.

“Why should I trust you?”  Unlike with the other messages, it took the cell phone a considerable amount of time to respond.

        FROM applicationsscarcity

        DATE 3.28

        TIME 13:07

MESSAGE we both have no other options

Rune leaned back.  “He found me,” she realized amazedly.
