Dirty

Dirty

A Poem by EquivalentExchange
"

Never dirty, never clean.

"

You always teetered between

two things, not like each other

you spent your life on the seam

dipping in and out of castes

you were never dirty, never clean

but you finally found your path

did you ever think, you'd be unclean?

you woke up, stains on your curtains

even though you felt, you'd never be certain

that day you were sure

this is what you always were

so you left all your friends behind

they all assumed, you'd lost your mind

so won't you answer them?

have you really, lost your mind?

You'd tried it before

but not quite, to this extent

you'd been on the floor

you'd been rusted and bent

but tell me, don't you crave more?

have you forgotten, the places we went?

You told me, how unhappy

the first one made you

how he painted your walls blue

he made you sit, day to day

he tried to break you, in every way

he dreamt of marriage

and he longed for children

so you'd stand again at this intersection?

and fight for what you had abandoned?

Tell me, how does it feel?

to leave it all behind

to pack you bags, and leave this place

when you were so happy

were you tired, of being in the middle?

I guess you're happier

being broken down, and dirty
