~MY CONSTANT COMPANION~

~MY CONSTANT COMPANION~

A Poem by Jillian Alexis

~MY CONSTANT COMPANION~

Hello Depression: my companion,

who never leaves my side;

I see you're here again today,

just as you were last night.

~

What do you want from me, old foe,

who's known me all my life;

Why are you here to break my heart,

and drink the tears I cry?

~

Tell me what you hope to gain,

from all my misery;

Does my pain bring you great joy,

oh you, who torments me?

~

You're blacker than the darkest night,

you fill my heart with dread;

I dwell on thoughts that come from you,

"I wish that I were dead.”

~

There's no escaping from your wrath,

I've tried but failed each time;

I can not make you go away,

nor from you can I hide.

~

If I could rid you of my life,

do you not think I would;

You've drained me of the strength I need,

to fight the fights I should.

Being bipolar myself I can seriously relate to this poem. Depression is such a never ending battle and you've captured the emotions of it perfectly. I actually imagined it as a dark creature of sorts hovering over me like a shadow that follows me, laughs and points at the unimaginable torment within me. I really really enjoyed this poem very much and am putting it in my library of favorite poems. The rhythm is amazing and you could not have captured the feeling better. thank you for such a wonderful poem. Bravo!
