Definition of Love

A Poem by Lynn Higgs
"

A POEM DESCRIBING THE CASUAL WAY WE TREAT LOVE WHAT REAL LOVE IS

"

Everyone says it easily

at first they all believe

love is something in abundance

so we forget to

cherish the ones we love

and the ones who we don't love

we tell them differently

Saying it is like greeting someone

Shake my head on how so casually

we claim to love everyone

regardless who they are

but love is hard

not everyone loves everyone

when we believe others we find

Hearts torn apart

ready to run

hide from the world cause we just

don';t want to hear

another person say they love us

with such phoniness

the troubles come

noone wants to be around

you may need them to listen

hm love seems to waver

thought it was in abundance

noone that said they love you

are there to hear your pleas

as the Ocean tide comes in

with all the worries of living this life

people who claim to love

disappear left as the tide

roll in with the struggles

so why not just give up on love

but it ,more than a word

its the smile you receive when

you say that kind word to some4one

whose day seem to be overwhelming

its the hug you get when you go see

that person who you've been missing

or the kiss between you and that person

you're meant to be with

Love is the tear for someone

who is just ignorant

what it means to love

it not a casual word to throw around

It sounds pretty but it so much more

than a group of phonics put together

it the listening ear

when someone has disrespect you

or the forgiving heart when you messed up

the laughter to make things comfortable

or the holding when your world falls apart

While most people don't realize what love is

or casually say it thinking

noone really pays aattention to the word

there is those of us

who believe Love is strong

it there to watch people do the impossible

not look on with envy

but encourage them to keep going

its the person who walks away

yes even the person who walks away

cause that what you need them to do

Love is self sacrifacing

always looking what the other neeeds are

putting them first

love is all these things

And theres more

If you start to lose faith in the word

realize its the action that counts

Don't believe those

who can let the word

roll off their tongue

thinking i8ts a salutation

but believe those who will listen

who talk to you when

everyone else has turn away

making you smile when you don't want to

or just holding you quietly letting you

feel safe for a little bit

while the world roars

its angry screams at you

This is love i look forward to

the love that make sunsets beautiful

no matter the colors

or the love when you're

struggling to overcome

steps in and makes the challegne fun

this love is the one I want

not the phoney kind

or the one where tyhey may look great

but fail to notice

when i need to be held

that person who will want to be with me at all times

the kind of love

that will hold my hand

if the news is going to

be hard to digest

I believe it there somewhere

keep holding on

one day all these struggles

will be worth the effort

cause i believe Love wont desert me

someone will love me like that

than Love will be complete

with the one who understands me

never judging me

never chastizing me

but just being there for me

I like this a lot, Lynn. It's too bad that it got buried in the muck of time but the system elves elevated it to special status and there it is... and there you are, pearling your wisdom for all to see, to read, and try to understand. You're right, "love" is a word that is so bandied about, so misused and abused. Perhaps the trouble is with our personal expectations and understanding for what we think/feel the word should mean? Either way, I think you've got a good handle on a starting point for a better-than-average understanding, especially considering how much is written on the subject. Someone could spend their entire lives, reading nonstop, and still not cover all that has (or will) be written on "love." When all else fails, write a love story. People are in love with "love." Kudos for giving us your two cents!
