You Muted Love

You Muted Love

A Poem by Vincent Cuccolo

You muted love without a warning.

Unarmed, I braced for your attack;

You said this is what you wanted,

You swore you wouldn’t look back.

You tore down what was pure.

Harnessed, I watched you do the worst;

You said my pleading eyes meant nothing,

You swore you wouldn’t feel cursed.

You shook the memories from your head.

Horrified, I watched them fall to the ground in pain;

You said they’ve become a sickening nightmare,

You swore they left a bitter stain.

You set my heart to flames.

Crippled, I watched my being fade to ash;

You said I was completely worthless,

You swore I was better off in the trash.

You muted love without a warning.

Unarmed, I braced for your attack;

You say this isn’t what you wanted,

But now, there’s no turning back.
