By The Life

By The Life

A Poem by Vincent Cuccolo

Time pestered me

Disheartened my hopes

Crumbled my dreams

To no end

My bitter little friend

Stretching on tirelessly

While my odds for survival

Glare in betrayal

I’m spent

Weary

This marathon of exhaustion

Has me by the soul

But leaves just enough life inside

For death to tickly-tease me

A careful torture

Deliberate

Unfair

Something has to give

BUT THERE’S NOTHING TO GET

Lose, lose

Everyone’s screwed

When neither of us wants to take the blame

Too proud for our own good

Heads held high enough to touch the sky

I want to run

The faintest blur

Instinct has me by the mind

But history claims me by the life
