Frozen Kisses

Frozen Kisses

A Poem by Sherry Asbury
"

A poem to point to the plight of the homeless

"
Frozen Kisses

Bitter zing of winter’s tongue
kissing eagerly, trying to find
a place to press its arctic breath
against skin that is pale and blind

Frantic glitter in the ginger air
giving each head a hat of lace
The homeless live with no shelter
to protect their exposed ,frozen bones

Lips blue in the rage of freezing rain
try to taste some hint of spring,
but ice-knives and deadening cold
are all that will fill their shivering days

These times are truly revealing us as a society on how indifferent we are towards the homeless. Every day I see encampments growing larger around the small city I live in. Instead of trying to find shelter and assistance for them they are being herded out of their makeshift tents. There are families living in cars at shopping center parking lots to avoid the rampant crime in these small homeless communities. It is absolutely horrible and heartbreaking to see. We fail as a society to care for the least of us in giving them shelter and food. To see them not as human beings suffering. We are losing our own humanity by not living up to the virtues we espouse. Thank you Sherry for shining a light on this in your poem.
