A Word or Two

A Word or Two

A Poem by Echezonachukwu Nduka

I hear false testimonies
from wagging tongues
their words are unsettled dusts
flying aimlessly in the open air

close your ears, I pray you
lest, you be driven into a pit of deceit
for you are adorned with rags
your heads are crowns made of thorns
tears like lines race across your roughened face
yet, you force a weary smile
in your smiles, I hear a plea for justice

strength, a force which flows in our bloodstream
hope, the anchor which holds our sailing faith
fear, that which forces itself on our dreams
we live and dine with them

we are a people of passion
though teardrops decorates our countenance,
we wipe them with our voice
our voice, a force on the face of troubled waters
this strenghtens our strength
and battles our hopelessness.
