Don't Ask Me Why the Birds Sing

Don't Ask Me Why the Birds Sing

A Poem by Echezonachukwu Nduka

Now, perchance you visit the clouds
or walk the streets of Alvin-Loving
all alone-

The songs of those little creatures
tweeting and chirping on treetops
and a slender wood edge gives you
great delight-
Enjoy those tunes while they last,
For they don't come all the time
They are the most natural of all
tuneful tunes.

Do you know the tune of the birds?
Have you ever wondered how they
found their tunes?
The song of the Nightingale pleases
the sun and she spares them from
her wrath,
Her song touches the heart of the
moon and she sends forth her smiles.

The birds are Griots
The birds are Minstrels
The birds are Troubadours

You listen to their chirpy songs
and they delight your heart.
You are afraid to say hey!
For the birds might get scared
and fly away with their tunes in
their slender bodies and weak wings.

You know that you enjoy their company,
And you still worry about their gifts.
Don't ask me why the birds sing,
For if you ask me,
I'll ask you too!
