"The Purpose of Life"

"The Purpose of Life"

A Poem by Night

And it makes me wonder...!

God of mercy, Father of light,

Almighty God and Creator of life.

A question I ask on this lonely night...

What is the purpose of life?

We're here for awhile and then were gone

Like the words of an old forgotten song.

Our days go by like dust in the wind

How soon we wish we were young again.

Children laugh and old men die

Graves are filled and woman cry.

The green grass withers and leaves turn brown

They pass from this world without a sound.

Babies are born and people rejoice

Brought into this world without a choice.

From young to old much too fast

And before we know it  our life is past.

Our life's a book a short story at best

When the last page is turned, then we rest.

Ashes to ashes and dust to dust

Now we live and die we must.

Brevity of life and purpose of man

Our time is running

like an hourglass of sand.

To be immortal and die never

Oh how I wish I could live forever.

So what is the purpose of life...

But to live for God and to die for Christ.

Stunning write. I've too many thoughts to throw down on a review. Life I think is meant to be our journey toward Him. Some have a shorter path than others. How are we to appreciate paradise when we have no reference from hardship or pain. As one that hasn't wandered too much away from the straight and narrow, the few "troubles" I have created or clung to have been my lessons as they hit me quite hard. All of us have a different journey, yet in it together. I do not wish to be on earth forever. I love my life, very appreciative and blessed, and I do not fear death for myself. However, I still have children at home. My biggest fear has been following in the footsteps of my mother and grandmother that they passed from cancers when their children were still young. Once I know my children are safely out the door and capable adults, they are my legacy here. Everything after that as they say... Is gravy. Nice writing! If it gets me commenting or thinking this much, it's good!

A question I ask on this lonely night...

What is the purpose of life?

wow! the purpose of life, a question everyone asks themselves. it makes me dizzy! or the lexotan is why i'm dizzy :S anyways, the question asked here is so very contrevercial (don't mind my typos) and the answers are of a great variaty! a scary question indeed.
to live for God, good idea!
but maybe we live to make our life worth living
i'm sorry for the messed up review, loved the poem!

Our lives may be short and the "Hour" near or far but to live as God intended lasts beyond this lifetime. Very well written in thought, rhyme and verse.

The questions of life and purpose are not easily answered... it is our quest to find them that is a purpose in itself.
