Chasing Purple Dreams

Chasing Purple Dreams

A Poem by Melinda McQueen

Chasing Purple Dreams

Standing in a trance,
he watched as the boat sailed away.

Though he didn’t want her to go,
he would not convince her to stay.

The sky was alive in purple,
reflecting on the ocean clear.

The beauty of it all,
overshadowing his greatest fear.

She had big dreams
that lured her to seek out.

That she’d succeed,
he had no doubt.

The world was big
and it was calling her name.

She so wanted to achieve
the lights and fame.

Through flowing tears,
she told him that she had to go.

Because he loved her,
he knew it had to be so.

Though she loved him,

something in her had to be free.

She had to see what was out there--
she was chasing her purple dreams.

Promising to return someday,
she’d kissed him one last time.

He had vowed to wait there on the dock
when at last, his heart, she’d come find.

Standing there with her dog by his side,
he continued to watch her leave.

The purple sky mirrored in the vast water
which would take his love far away indeed.

The sailboat dotted with tiny crystals
like shiny diamonds in the night.

He couldn’t help but to think
that for her, it was the beginning of her shine.

But to him, she had always shone
more than any diamond could shine.

She was his world--
his brilliantly beautiful light.

Would she ever come back?

She would, or so he had to believe.

Yet, deep down, he found himself wishing
that he had been her purple dream.

The desire to follow your dreams can be strong. Purple ones even stronger. It is tough on those who aren't part of the plan. Beautifully conveyed Melinda and I love, love, love your posted image.
